Bee Balm
Also known as Monarda, it displays clusters of colorful flowers above fragrant, mint-like foliage. Makes for a nice cut flower in a floral arrangement. Bee Balm not only attracts bees (as the name suggests), but also butterflies & hummingbirds! Works great planted in borders, wildflower gardens, & on woodland edges. Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Keep soil moist, but try to avoid overhead watering.

Boltonia
Also commonly known as False Aster. Masses of starlike flowers with classic yellow centers atop sturdy plants beginning in late summer & continuing until even after frost. Produces a blanket of color above upright mounds of lanced-shaped, grayish-green leaves on branching stems. One plant makes a grand show, & a row of them could be used as a flowering hedge. A perennial favorite!

Chelone
Also commonly known Hotlips Turtlehead. Cheerful spikes of colorful snapdragon-like flowers emerge above the spreading foliage in late summer. Ideal middle-of-the-border plant for contrasting color & foliage among dwarf shrubs. Thrives in shaded settings & prefers moist conditions. An herbaceous perennial.
Crocosmia
Also known as Montbretia, it adds a tropical flair to gardens & landscapes. Beginning in midsummer & continuing into early fall in some climates, brilliant flowers stand in rows on wiry, gracefully arched stems that are perfect for cutting. Broad, sword-like leaves are attractive even when the plants are not in bloom and, from a design standpoint, are effective for adding a spiky textured element to the landscape.

Dodecatheon
Also commonly known as Giant Shooting Star, it is a native North American wildflower. Plants form a low rosette of rounded leaves, bearing short stems of flowers. Petals flare back, giving each blossom a star-like appearance, somewhat like a tiny cyclamen. They will go dormant & disappear by mid summer, so do not disturb the area. Excellent for a waterside planting, but adaptable to rich border conditions or the woodland garden. Excellent cut flower.
Eupatorium
Commonly known as Joe Pye Weed, it has showy, dome-shaped flower heads that bloom from late summer to early fall. Provides spectacular late summer color & vertical interest to borders & naturalized areas. A wonderful addition to meadows, native gardens, & in stream margins. An herbaceous perennial.

Filipendula
Also known as Queen Of The Prairie. Elegantly divided, deep green ferny leaves provide the base for the colorful double blossoms on graceful, feathery plumes held well above the foliage. Begins blooming in June & flowers over a long period. A great low/no maintenance plant that is often underused. Will be quite happy & carefree in your border. Likes a moist soil, but this variety will tolerate quite a bit of dryness once established. The long stems make for a good cut flower.

Gunnera
Enormous, puckered leaves of this tropical looking, prehistoric plant emerge in spring, reaching six feet across or more, creating a dramatic waterside or greenhouse specimen. In late spring, a robust stalk bearing bronzy-brown inflorescence adds to the exotic appeal. Evergreen in frost-free areas.
Japanese Iris
Colorful blooms rise above the narrow gray-green foliage on stiff stems - a stand out in cut flower arrangements. Excellent in damp borders, at the edge of ponds or streams, or even in pots plunged halfway to the rim in water gardens. An herbaceous perennial.

Pacific Coast Iris
Like all irises, Pacific Coast iris flowers have large, downward arching falls, upward to upright standards, & prominent style arms. These can all be one color, or all different, with various amounts of veining, ruffling & other patterns. They require well-drained, acidic soil & prefer to have cool roots in summer & unfrozen roots in winter; amending with compost & topdressing with a woody mulch helps create these ideal conditions.

Also commonly known as Kaffir Lily or River Lily. It is a unique clump forming perennial known for its late summer display of red, salmon or pink flowers that offer interest in the garden when other perennials have long lost their bloom.

Beardless Dutch Iris-like, with rich blooms that rise above the refined, slender, blue-tinged green, sword-like foliage. Use in mass plantings for a stunning effect. Thrives in moist soils, where others will not. An herbaceous perennial.

Variegated Sweet Iris
Flashy, green & golden-striped foliage to brighten the garden! Light lavender-blue bearded flowers have a soft, sweet fragrance. Excellent near the front of borders where the foliage can be seen close up. Best in full sun, but this species is more shade-tolerant than many other species of iris. An herbaceous perennial.
Zantedeschia
Also commonly known as Calla Lily. Large, elegant flowers distinguish this time honored perennial. Produces a dense clump of fleshy dark green leaves from a thick rhizome. Plant in groups for a striking effect, especially in the moonlight.
