Astilbe

Also known as False Goat’s Beard, they are showy bloomers ideal for beautiful summer color in shaded areas. Tall, feathery blooms of various colors are valued for their light, airy quality rise above graceful mounds of attractive foliage. Thrives in dappled or full shade borders. Gorgeous in mass plantings. An herbaceous perennial.

There are many varieties within this type of perennial

Astilboides tabularis

An unusual perennial, formerly known as Rodgersia. Forms a large mound of deep green circular, umbrella-like leaves. Big creamy white plumes of Astilbe-like flowers make an appearance in early summer. Excellent for cutting. Plants may be divided in early spring. A bold specimen plant, very dramatic when happy!

 

Darmera

Also known as Umbrella Plant due to its upward facing leaves that typically collect & hold small pools of rain water. Small, pink-to-white flowers in rounded clusters appear atop thick hairy stems in early spring before the foliage emerges. It needs substantial space to grow & its bold foliage definitely attracts attention & looks great when combined with ferns, hostas, grasses and Solomon's seal. Attracts bees & butterflies, is good as a cut flower & has pleasant fall color.

Ferns

A bold & beautiful choice for shady borders & woodland gardens. There are lots of varieties to choose from, giving you a wide array of leave types & changing colors. Great complimentary plants to most shade-loving plants.

Hakonechloa

Also know as Japanese Forest Grass, it can be a graceful, colorful ground cover for shaded borders & container gardens. Slender stems holding bright yellow leaves with thin green stripes create a tiny bamboo-like effect. Foliage can change color as the weather cools in autumn. Naturalizes well & clumps spread gently.

Ligularia

Also known as Farfugium or Leopard Plant. Creates a mound of lush foliage that contrasts with its flowers. A natural for all beds & borders for contrast with green & lime foliage plants. Exceptional in containers.

Polemonium reptans

Commonly known as Jacob’s Ladder, this intriguing plant forms a tidy mound of bright foliage - can be variegated too. Lovely flowers make a striking combination with the foliage. Excellent for use as contrast or an accent in beds and borders. An herbaceous perennial.

Polygonatum

Commonly known as Solomon’s Seal. Rich green leaves will help to brighten shady beds, borders, & woodland gardens & will complement adjacent trees & shrubs. Arching, unbranched stems emerge from the soil forming a small clump. Lovely white bell-shaped flowers drip from the stems in spring. An herbaceous perennial.
