Aegopodium

Also commonly known as Bishop’s Weed. Does really well in deep shade where grass and other plants refuse to grow. A deciduous ground cover that is fast-growing with shallow roots that sit above those of most companion plants so that they don’t interfere with their growth.

Ajuga

Also commonly known as Bugle. A wonderful, attractive ground cover option that quickly fills in a large area. A creeping evergreen plant that smothers out weeds while adding exceptional foliage color & blooms. It is also good for erosion control.

Arctostaphylos

Also commonly known as Bearberry. A beautiful evergreen type of plant that is low-maintenance & low-water. A wonderful combination showy flowers (early in the season) & food for wildlife. Suitable for sun or shade locations, depending on the variety.

Asarum

Also commonly known as Wild Ginger - not related to culinary ginger. An evergreen plant that is a moderate grower with unique heart-shaped leaves. Easy to grow, versatile & great for a woodland garden, as a shade ground cover or mass plantings.

Brunnera

Also commonly known as Siberian Bugloss. They have delicate flowers that hover above unique frosted foliage. A great choice to brighten up any shady area.

Cornus

Also commonly known as Bunchberry. A lush carpet-like ground cover that has deeply veined, rich green leaves & showy white flowers, followed by clusters of bright red berries in the fall. Well-suited to the dappled shade of woodland gardens. A great choice for naturalized areas & for edging shaded pathways. An herbaceous perennial.

Galium

Also commonly known as Sweet woodruff. A wonderful shady ground cover choice that creeps & forms a mat-like habit. Produces clusters of white, star-shaped flowers in the spring and has very fragrant, dark green leaves. Easy to grow, versatile & deer resistant, as well as rabbit proof.

Gaultheria

Also commonly known as Wintergreen. It is a dense creeping ground cover that spreads by underground stems. Evergreen, glossy, oval leaves turn reddish at the onset of cold weather. Small flowers are followed by long-lasting scarlet berries.

Lamium

Also commonly known as Dead Nettle. A vigorous grower that is deer resistant. Produces delicate snapdragon-like flowers that nicely compliment attractive two-toned foliage.

Leptinella

Also commonly known as Brass Buttons, this vigorous low growing, spreader is a good choice for rock gardens, the spaces stepping stones or cracks & lawns where grass won’t grow. Suitable for sun or shade locations, depending on the variety.

Mahonia

Also commonly known as creeping Oregon Grape. This low, sprawling North American native shrub features leathery, spiny, green foliage & sprays of bright yellow spring flowers that are followed by clusters of blue-black fruit in late summer. Excellent for use as a large scale ground cover in a woodland garden, or in a small shrub grouping. Provides effective erosion control for slopes. Evergreen.

Oxalis

Also commonly known as Woodsorrel. A slow grower with dark-green, heart-shaped foliage that can be almost purple on the underside. Produces tiny, sweet star-shaped flowers from spring until fall.

Pachysandra

Also commonly known as Japanese Spurge. It is a great ground cover for tough areas, like under trees or in spots with poor soil. It is an easy-to-grow plant that does not mind competing for nutrients. Also produces small white, fragrant flowers in the spring.

Primuloides

Also commonly known as Saxifraga. An evergreen plant that is great for dense shade & is incredibly useful. It is a well-behaved slow spreader that looks wonderful when planted between stepping stones or stairs. Suitable for sun or shade locations, depending on the variety.

Selaginella

Also commonly known as Spike-moss. A ground cover that is not actually a true moss but more closely related to the fern family. Needs consistent moisture to remain a lush green. Suitable for sun or shade locations, depending on the variety.

Soleirolia

Also commonly known as Baby Tears, it resembles a dense, yet delicate bed of tiny green leaves. Can be used as a grass alternative, with no mowing needed. Has a soft, moss-like feel & is relatively low maintenance. Suitable for sun or shade locations, depending on the variety.

Vinca

Also commonly known as Periwinkle. A tough, low-maintenance & pest-free plant that has beautiful foliage & flowers. While it is a stunning & vigorous grower, it does have the tendency to take over an area. Suitable for sun or shade locations, depending on the variety.

Viola

A low-growing wildflower with toothed heart-shaped foliage.  Produces pretty flowers from spring until early summer. Thrives in lightly shaded areas that have moist, well-draining soils.
